波得陨石坑位于月球近侧的Sinus Aestuum火山平原附近，靠近月球赤道以北不远，是从最初的106个候选地点中选出的14个潜在宇航员着陆地点之一。这些地点需要满足安全月球着陆的工程约束，包括为了通信目的位于近侧、地形相对平坦，并且位于低纬度以确保获得足够的太阳能。
